Week 2. My contract

At the conclusion of 23 1/2 Things, I would like to be able to download a podcast and listen to it from my personal computer. I think this simple goal will help me feel infinitely closer to the knowledge of my friends, who are much more adept with technology than me. I'd also like to have a greater knowledge of Flickr and what purposes I may use Flickr for. And, while I don't imagine myself becoming a frequent user of many of the social networking sites out there, I would like to be familiar with Facebook and just how it differs from Friendster and myspace (the social networking sites I do know). UTube really hasn't stunned me so far but I am curious to see more of the creative work of the novice. I may never be one of the initial adopters of technology but, given what I do, I think it's important that I familiarize myself with the technologies out there so that I might knowledgeably contribute to conversations on the subject.

Week 1. Lifelong Learners

#2) Lifelong Learning & L2

Listen to this podcast [1:31]-->powered by ODEOAmong libraries, lifelong learning is one of those core values we shelve our books by. So it makes sense that before we embark on this new online learning and discovery journey that we should take a few minutes to review a few habits that can assist in creating lifelong learners. These habits, which we’ve called the Seven and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners, will provide you with a refresher on what it means to be a lifelong learner.Discovery Exercise:
Make sure you have headphones or speakers attached to your computer.
Open up the 7 & 1/2 Habits online tutorial and view the online tutorial.
As you watch and listen, write down which habit among the 7 & 1/2 that is easiest for you and which is hardest. You will use your personal blog (which you will set up next) to post your thoughts about lifelong learning journey.

Week 1. Discovery is Fun

Start here to get an overview of the program:

#1) Discovery has never been so much fun ...
Listen to this podcast [1:53]-->powered by ODEOWelcome to QL's Learning 2.0 program & blog. Chances are if you've found your way here you're either:
a member of Queens Library's staff who's participating in the Learning 2.0 Challenge or you're
interested in learning about and playing around (yes, recreation is part of our mission) with some new web 2.0 tools that will help you expand your information literacy toolbox.- or -
are just interested in earning an awesome $25 gift card and the possibility of winning a new laptop! Either way, it's good to have you!! Learning 2.0 is an online learning program that encourages staff to learn more about emerging technologies on the web that are changing the way people, society and libraries access information and communicate with each other. Over the course of the next nine weeks (possibly 13wks,) this website will highlight “23 1/2 Things” and discovery exercises to help staff become familiar with blogging, RSS news feeds, tagging, wikis, podcasting, online applications, and video and image hosting sites. To familiarize yourself with this project, be sure to read the About page. The FAQs should answer most of your questions about this program. If not, then please add your question to the FAQ page as a comment. The program starts Sept 24th and concludes 13 weeks later. Go at your pace, just enjoy.

Week I: Introduction

Hi all and thank you, in advance, for paticipating in Queens Library's 23 1/2 Things Learning Experience!

I think everyone will dig this experience--even the technophobes (like myself) out there. Understanding and utilizing the current technologies that are available in today's world, is invaluable knowledge to anyone, who works in the information field, as we all do. So, again, thank you for getting this far and taking the time to explore what 23 1/2 Things is about. I think you will find, while it's daunting at first, that you're all more than capable of completeing each and every one of these things. Best of luck in your work.
